A summary of the Book of Galatians
The Book of Galatians is a letter written by the Apostle Paul to
the churches in Galatia. It was written between 49 AD and 58 AD.
As with many of Paul's letters, it's difficult to pinpoint exactly where
it was written, but one theory is that it was written in Antioch or
Ephesus during Paul's second or third missionary journey.
1. Galatians 1: The Apostle Paul introduces himself and rebukes
the Galatians for turning away from the Gospel he had taught them
to another gospel (which is not another). Paul defends his
apostleship and asserts that his authority and message came
directly from Jesus Christ and God the Father who raised Him from
the dead (Galatians 1:1). He recounts how after his conversion, he
didn't immediately consult with anyone, but instead went to Arabia
and later returned to Damascus. Galatians 1:15-17
2. Galatians 2: Paul narrates his journey to Jerusalem with
Barnabas and Titus and defends the true Gospel against the
Judaizers who were teaching that Gentiles must be circumcised
according to the law of Moses to be saved. Paul argues for the
justification by faith and not by works of the law. Galatians 2:16
3. Galatians 3: Paul explains that righteousness comes by faith,
just as Abraham "believed God, and it was accounted to him for
righteousness". Galatians 3:6
He also introduces the concept that believers are the children of
God through faith in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:26
4. Galatians 4: Paul expounds on the idea that believers are sons
and heirs of God through Christ, not slaves under the law. He uses
an allegory of Sarah and Hagar to illustrate the difference between
living under the law (bondage) and living under the promise
(freedom). Galatians 4:24-26
5. Galatians 5: Here Paul encourages the Galatians to stand in the
liberty of Christ and not be entangled again with the yoke of
bondage (the Law). He explains the nature of life in the Spirit
versus life in the flesh, introducing the fruits of the Spirit.
Galatians 5:22-23
6. Galatians 6: Paul concludes his letter by advising the Galatians
to bear each other's burdens, and to not grow weary in doing good,
for they will reap in due season if they do not give up.
Galatians 6:2,9.
He contrasts the motives and behavior of the Judaizers with his
own, and ends by saying that the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be
with their spirit. Galatians 6:18
