Miracles in the Gospel of Matthew
Key DifferencesThe 5,000 were primarily Jews in Galilee. The 4,000 were likely Gentiles in the Decapolis region.
Bread and Baskets:In the feeding of the 5,000, 12 baskets were left over, possibly symbolic of the 12 tribes of Israel. In the feeding of the 4,000, 7 baskets were left over, possibly symbolic of God’s provision for the Gentile nations (some link it to the 7 nations displaced in Canaan, Deut. 7:1).Baskets Used:The first miracle used kophinos baskets, small personal baskets (often carried by Jews). The second miracle used spuris baskets, larger baskets (the same type used to lower Paul in Acts 9:25).
