In Galatians Chapter 5 (AMPC), Paul expands on the themes of
freedom in Christ and the conflict between the Spirit and the flesh.
Paul begins by asserting that Christ has set the Galatians free from the
yoke of bondage and urging them to stand firm in this freedom. He
warns that if they accept circumcision, Christ will be of no benefit to
them, and they will be obligated to keep the whole law.
Galatians 5:1-3, AMPC:
Vs.1 "In [this] freedom Christ has made us free [and completely
liberated us]; stand fast then, and do not be hampered and held
ensnared and submit again to a yoke of slavery [which you have once
put off].”
Vs.2 “Notice, it is I, Paul, who tells you that if you receive
circumcision, Christ will be of no profit (advantage, avail) to you [for if
you distrust Him, you can gain nothing from Him].
Vs.3 “I once more protest and testify to every man who receives
circumcision that he is under obligation and bound to practice the
whole of the Law and its ordinances".
Paul then explains that the only thing that counts in Christ Jesus is
faith expressing itself through love. He warns them against letting their
freedom become an opportunity for the flesh, but rather to serve one
another through love.
The whole law is fulfilled in one word: "You shall love your neighbor as
yourself" Galatians 5:13-14, AMPC:
Vs. 13 "For you, brethren, were [indeed] called to freedom; only [do not
let your] freedom be an incentive to your flesh and an opportunity or
excuse [for selfishness], but through love you should serve one another."
Vs. 14 "For the whole Law [concerning human relationships] is complied
with in the one precept, You shall love your neighbor as [you do]
yourself".
In the final part of the chapter, Paul contrasts the works of the flesh
with the fruit of the Spirit. He explains that those who belong to Christ
have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If they live by the
Spirit, they should also walk by the Spirit.
Galatians 5:22-25, AMPC:
Vs.22 “But the fruit of the [Holy] Spirit [the work which His presence
within accomplishes] is love, joy (gladness), peace, patience (an even
temper, forbearance), kindness, goodness (benevolence), faithfulness,”
Vs.23 “Gentleness (meekness, humility), self-control (self-restraint,
continence). Against such things there is no law [that can bring a
charge].”
Vs.24 “And those who belong to Christ Jesus (the Messiah) have crucified
the flesh (the godless human nature) with its passions and appetites and
desires.
Vs.25 “If we live by the [Holy] Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. [If by
the Holy Spirit we have our life in God, let us go forward walking in line,
our conduct controlled by the Spirit]".
